Recessed lighting, also known as can lights, offer a clean, flush-mounted look that’s perfect for modern spaces. When installing recessed lights, the first step is to locate the joists in your ceiling so you can position the lights accordingly. Use a stud finder to mark the joists, then use a drywall saw to cut the appropriate sized openings. Be very careful when cutting the holes, as you don’t want to damage any existing wiring or pipes in the ceiling.
Next, run the electrical wiring to each light location, connecting the black, white and ground wires. For this, you may need to snake new Romex cable through the ceiling joists or walls to reach each recessed light position. Use wire nuts to safely connect the wires, making sure there are no exposed copper strands that could cause a short circuit.
Insert the recessed light fixture into the opening, securing it in place with the clips or screws provided. Make sure the light is flush with the ceiling surface and level. Then, install the trim ring or bezel around the light to create a finished look. This decorative frame hides the raw edge of the drywall cutout and provides a polished appearance.
For the best results, be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions carefully and use the proper insulation around the light housing to prevent heat buildup. Some recessed lights require insulation contact (IC) rated housings if they will be covered by insulation in the ceiling. Take the time to do this properly, as improper installation can be a fire hazard.
Once all the lights are installed, restore power to the circuit and test each one to ensure they are functioning correctly. Make any necessary adjustments before closing up the ceiling. Recessed lighting offers a clean, modern look that can dramatically improve the lighting in any room.
